One of my friends with a real job is coming to visit me here in France, and we're planning a trip–within–a–trip to somewhere else in Europe. Probably 3 days, 4 nights. Discussing the budget for this trip, my friend goes "So what were you thinking, like $2000?" My reaction:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Obviously I'm extremely lucky to even be in this position in the first place, but the contrast between college student (even with an awesome scholarship/awesome job/awesomely generous parents) and well paid adult is pretty stark.

Don't you have to be like 25 or something though to qualify for the insurance needed to drive the ring? I looked into it and I'm definitely too young, but he's only like 24, which I think might still be too young.

No, you need to be 25 to rent a car there... If you come with your own car, you're good to go. Keep in mind that you have to carefully choose your car rental company. All german car rental company exclude the nurburgring off of their list. Most british ones do the same thing too. In france through, there are no "nurburgring close" in the rental contracts, unless you live on the German border with local rental companies that include it.
As of right now, the Ring is NOT a racetrack. It's a one way toll road with no speed limits. So legally, your french car rental insurance will cover you to drive on it.

When do you plan on going?
I'll go 3 days in June, not sure ofthe dates yet, waiting for the schedule to come out.
PS: also the rent4ring minimum age is 21 year old.

I don't think we'd go, as my friend is looking for some more exotic cultural destinations (possible Prague and/or Budapest), but this will be in like two weeks.

This and everything about Mont Blanc leads me to believe that the French simply do not give a shit.

Well, unlike americans we don't risk our financial lives if we serve a hot coffe to someone who sues you for a couple millions when the burn themselves ;)
It helps a lot to be allowed to do a crap load of stuff for a reasonnable price.
